Provenance:

Property from the Collection of the Architect W. Kelly Oliver The John Gillin house, completed in 1958, was Frank Lloyd Wright's final residential commission and his only residential project in Dallas. While technically a Usonian home due to its engineering and utilization of local building materials, it is atypical compared to most of his Usonian designs, most notably because of its size (this is the largest residence Wright designed) as well as its use of angles. The archetypal Usonian house is fairly small, meant to be accessible to the middle class, and situated around a garden space in an L-shape. Like the Kalita Humphreys Theater, Wright's only other Dallas commission, completed in 1959, the Gillin House was planned along a diamond grid and features countless triangles, layered and sprawling, resulting in a fractal-like synthesis of order and chaos. Although Wright was in his 80s while designing this home, the present drawings nonetheless demonstrate his unyielding attention to detail and control over every minute design decision. These drawings come from the archive of William Kelly Oliver, who was a member of the Taliesin Associated Architects and oversaw this project as well as the construction of the Kalita Humphreys Theater.
